What is "Evidence Based" Therapy?

Evidence-based therapy means that the methods and techniques used in therapy have been scientifically studied and shown to be effective in treating specific mental health conditions. These are proven approaches that achieve positive outcomes based on research and clinical evidence.

Types of Providers

Therapy providers include psychiatrists, who are medical doctors specializing in mental health and can prescribe medication; psychologists, who hold doctoral degrees and provide psychotherapy using various approaches; licensed counselors and clinical social workers, who offer counseling and therapy, often specializing in specific areas like trauma or family dynamics. Each type of provider brings unique qualifications and approaches to therapy, catering to different client needs and preferences, from medication management to talk therapy and specialized interventions. Choosing the right provider often depends on the nature of your mental health concern, treatment goals, and personal rapport with the therapist.

Factors for Successful Therapy

The therapist's skills, experience, and training play a significant role in your outcomes in therapy. A competent therapist knows how to create a safe and supportive environment, uses therapeutic techniques appropriately, and adapts their approach to meet the your needs. When there is a good fit between the therapist's approach and your preferences and needs, therapy tends to be more effective.

Finding the Right Fit

While specific therapeutic techniques and approaches are important, research consistently shows that the strength of the relationship with your therapist significantly influences treatment outcomes across all types of psychotherapy.

In short, when you feel understood and supported by your therapist, you are more likely to engage in the therapeutic process and benefit from it.

Additional Factors for Success

Personal factors that can impact the effectiveness of therapy include motivation and readiness for change, consistency and continuity of care, and environment and support system. It is also important to find therapy that is the right fit practically, meaning that it is affordable for your budget, and available in times that work with your schedule.

Approximately 8% of adults in the United States will experience Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) at some point in their lives.
